Infrastructure of the Province
HEALTH  CARE

A total of 16 hospitals with a combined capacity of 670 beds and 357 health personnel serve the medical needs of the province. Of these, 10 are primary hospitals, 2 secondary and 4 tertiary. Occupancy rates in all district hospitals (primary and secondary) are lower than the private and regional (tertiary) hospitals. Contributory factors to this is the devolution of health functions, lack of doctors, insufficient drugs and medicines and poor facility. In 1999, the Surigao Medical Center has the highest  occupancy rate (84%) followed by Caraga Regional Hospital (formerly Provincial Hospital) while Sta. Monica District Hospital posted the least occupancy rate of only 17.36%.

Excluding Surigao City, the province has 380 barangays with only 84 Barangay Health Stations (BHS), 13 doctors, 29 nurses, 3 medical technologist, 16 dentists/dental aides, 121 midwives, 36 Rural Sanitary Inspectors, 2,655 active BHWs and 577 trained birth attendants. There is  really a need of medical personnel especially doctors in rural areas since the ratio is one doctor for the whole population in the municipality.Of the 27 municipalities, only 13 have doctors.
